Her swollen abdomen alludes to pregnancy, and hence, to fertility. The Bambara live in the region around Bamako, the capital of Mali. Their traditions include six male societies Ntomo, Komo, Kono, Tyiwara, Kore, and Nama each with its own type of mask, worn to display their status in society. This is a Kore mask; concerned with the sky and with the bringing of rain to make the crops
